Born John C. Chapman, he was a prominent early baseball player and manager. Chapman played for the National Association Brooklyn Atlantics in 1874 and St. Louis clubn in 1875. He is best known for his 11-year managerial career between 1876 and 1892 with Louisville, Milwaukee, Worchester, Detroit, and Buffalo of the National League.
